This past Tuesday morning John Thomas, trumpet musician, got up and conducted the band in a stellar song performance. Here is a little about John:—– Since 1973 John has lived in Los Angeles, touring and/or recording as lead trumpet for Count Basie, Chick Corea, Woody Herman, Maria Schneider, Bill Holman, Ella Fitzgerald, Joe Williams and many others. His playing is featured on hundreds of albums, television series and motion pictures such as the movie Ray.
The band rehearses at a new time of 11:30 am. The word is out–two hours of dancing and music joy, 11:30am – 1:30pm. Dancers enjoyed the live music of the Big Band Alumni this past Tuesday, January 28, 2020. Here is a sneak peak of the scene at Las Hadas Mexican Restaurant last Tuesday.
The band are almost all graduates of some of the greatest big bands of all time; like Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, Harry James, Woody Herman, Stan Kenton, Count Basie,Billy May, and many more names of the Big Band era. You will hear the band play authentic swinging sounds of the 40’s played with the same passion that made the “Swing Era” what it was; the way this music was meant to be played.
The leader of The Big Band Alumni was Johnny Vana. Johnny, who in his career was also an executive with Capitol Records and taught at University of Texas, El Paso. He led many other bands early on in his career. Johnny took over the Big Band Alumni Band some twenty years ago and kept it going all these years with his tireless work and energy that he put into it as bandleader. A crew of individuals formed to devote their talent and energy to help Johnny with the band. Today the band continues as the crew continue to keep things going every week so the musicians can continue to come and play for you. The Big Band Alumni played many shows over the years at fabulous venues under Johnny’s leadership. Johnny had a loyal following of fans. We have excellent musicians in this band and you need to come see them to find out for yourself.
The Big Band Alumni evokes memories of years gone by, inspiring whole new generations of dancers to take the dance floor right alongside the “youth” who grew up dancing to and sharing a passion for the best dance music of all time. You only have to hear this orchestra once before you’re ready to join the crowd and build some new memories of your own one note at a time.
